This event is open to all UAL Postgraduate students, UAL staff, as well as a wider community of alumni, practitioners and researchers in this field.

This DRAW event welcomes Dr. Kimathi Donkor in his new role as MA Drawing Course Leader who will present on his practice and his thoughts on drawing - in conversation with Tania Kovats.

Kimathi Donkor has established an international reputation for his work that powerfully appropriates from the European cannon. Described by Coline Milliard in ARTINFO as ‘an enthusiastic cultural sampler. His large-scale figurative paintings are genuine cornucopias of interwoven reference: to Western art, social and political events, and to the artist's own biography. But all share a common goal: the celebration and exposure of lesser-known, or shady, aspects of ancient and contemporary history, from great female leaders of Africa and the African diaspora to the harrowing "mistakes" of the Metropolitan Police.’

Donkor's command of image-making has a political content blended with subtle drawn narratives and elements from his own life. 'More recently drawings from his 'notebook' series have become more prominent in his practice.' Donkor’s Doctorial study addressed a radical reconsidering of how art is interpreted in both institutional and education contexts. His practice includes his role as an educator, having held posts at various London art schools including the BA Drawing course at Camberwell.

Donkor’s work has most recently been seen at ‘The Diaspora Pavilion’ in Venice; 'Untitled: Art on the Conditions of Our Time' at the New Art Exchange, Nottingham, 'Ink and Blood: Stories of Abolition', International Slavery Museum, Liverpool; and was part of 'A History of Drawing' at Camberwell Space this January.
