Science fiction meets design fiction in this set design exhibition event, which reimagines an iconic scene from Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey using material from UAL's Stanley Kubrick Archive, housed at London College of Communication.

The event, which includes a free exhibition, active workshop, film seminar and space walk, is a collaboration between LCC and multidisciplinary design studio, Scene Everything as part of London Design Festival.

Exhibition
14 September – 14 October
Private View: Friday 21 September, 6 – 9pm
Well Gallery, LCC

The Joy of Sets x The Kubrick Archive exhibition explores how we imagine, prototype and design the future – both technically and culturally – and how this features in popular culture, particularly science fiction.

Activating artefacts from the Stanley Kubrick Archive, the exhibition reimagines sci-fi film sets using Kubrick’s behind the scenes imagery and concept artwork as inspiration for the 1:1 scale sets that will be on display.

Inspirational items from the Kubrick archive will be on show over the course of the exhibition and from 19 – 22 September, visitors have a unique opportunity to see the film sets being built, and watch on as the exhibition actively takes shape.

Curated by Ben Stopher, Programme Director for Interactive and Visual Communication at LCC, the exhibition engages with the expanded practice of futures prototyping as part LCC’s approach to interaction design.

The exhibition features the collaborative work of students on the following courses within LCC’s School of Design:
BA (Hons) Interaction Design Arts
MA Graphic Media Design
MA Interaction Design Communication

Opening times:
Mon-Fri, 10am-8pm
Sat, 11am-5pm
Sun 18 Sept only 11am - 5pm, but closed all other Sundays

Workshop
19 – 22 September
Well Gallery, LCC

Visitors are invited to watch the exhibition's sci-fi set building take place as this Joy of Sets workshop unfolds within the gallery space from the 19 – 22 September.

The workshop is for LCC’s interaction design students and will be facilitated by Scene Everything artists Nicholas Mortimer and Joseph Popper.

The students will be challenged to get creative and explore a rapid prototyping approach to turning ideas into reality, at full scale. Visitors are invited to observe and ask questions as the workshop takes place.

The workshop will also be live streamed to the LCC Studio, inside Elephant and Castle’s Shopping Centre (First Floor) during the build.
