This one day symposium focuses on the value of social media for learning within creative arts and design higher education, while also drawing on innovative and effective practices from across the disciplines.
Workshops and discussions will provide a foil for the criticisms often aired that social media trivialise communication and engagement. Presenters will show how diverse social media platforms offer visual launchpads for instant dissemination of thoughts, ideas, and creative outputs and processes. In the creative arts these can lead to ‘testbed’ feedback, connections, collaborations and inspiration. In their use of social media students can spearhead practice and bring new ways of communicating to industry clients and others.
Who should attend?
This event is open to tutors, lecturers, technicians, study support tutors and librarians who have an interest in using social media, would like to know how to use them better, or have practice to share.
How can social media support creative arts learning, teaching and student support?
This symposium will share innovative practices in integrating social media into a variety of aspects of course delivery, professional and creative practice and information sharing. Speakers and participants will be able to discuss a range of different approaches to using social media and identify ways in which these can be used more effectively.

Chrissi Nerantzi is a National Teaching Fellow, academic developer at Manchester Metropolitan University and was named among the top fifty social media influencers in the UK by the Times Higher in 2015.
Charlotte Webb is Project Manager, Student Engagement (Digital) at University of the Arts London. She manages institutional research and projects that investigate students' experiences of digital technology for their learning. She is also undertaking an art practice-based PhD at Chelsea College of Art, which investigates the effects of the web on the artist's agency.
Professor Fred Deakin is UAL Chair of Interactive Digital Art.
David White is Head of Technology Enhanced Learning at University of the Arts London. David has worked in various roles where digital, learning and culture meet – including Senior lecturer in visual communication; making proof-of-concept pilots for delivering media online at the BBC; managing a team of online distance learning developers at the University of Oxford, and leading numerous studies around the impact of the Web on learning and higher education.
Dr Natascha Radclyffe-Thomas is a University of the Arts London Teaching Scholar, Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and currently Course Leader Leader for BA (Hons) Fashion Marketing.
Katerina Rimarcikova is Collaborative Unit & Projects Leader at LCF.
Lewis Bush is a photographer, writer, lecturer and occasional curator based in London. His photography practice explores the relationship between imagery and power. He is a lecturer on the BA and MA documentary photography courses at London College of Communication, has written extensively about photography, and maintains the Disphotic blog.
Tim Williams graduated from the MA in Fashion Design at CSM in 1982, then worked as a designer for, amongst others, Hardy Amies, Chelsea Girl, Conran Design Group, Debenhams and Agent Provocateur. His teaching practice started in 1997 at CSM, then moved to LCF in their business school. Presently senior Lecture and course leader at London College of Fashion across Graduate Diploma in Fashion Management, Fashion Design and Marketing.
Rob Stevens has had a varied graphic design, production and training career which included clients such as Calvin Klein, H&M, Lego, Disney, Odeon Cinemas, BBC Worldwide, EMAP & the NUJ. Rob has been an Associate Lecturer & Visiting Practitioner at UAL since 2008, specialising in visual communication, digital literacy & Adobe design software. He is currently teaching on the Fashion Product & Fashion Business Programmes at London College of Fashion.
