Art and Design education enables individuals and groups to actively engage and develop cultural practices, so cultural diversity lies at the heart of the development of all contemporary art and design practices.
Who should attend?
This event is open to tutors, lecturers, technicians, study support tutors and librarians who have an interest in equality and diversity.
How do we support and nurture new diverse cultural practices within the curriculum?
This conference will explore ways to embed equality and diversity in the art and design HE curriculum and teaching. Drawing on research and practice in the field, the event will showcase best practice in relation to inclusion and will offer delegates an opportunity to share ideas and approaches. Delegates will be able to discuss key concepts and explore the meanings and approaches adopted in the sector.
Terry Finnigan and Aisha Richards (tutors at UAL and authors of "Embedding equality and diversity in the curriculum: an art and design practitioners’ guide") will work with delegates to help them identify creative flexible and sustainable ways to develop inclusive pedagogy and curriculum in the studio.
Bee Tajudeen is the Education Officer for SUARTS, the UAL Student Union. Bee is also a Content Developer for Shades of Noir, where she discussed race and diversity in the creative and media industries. She is a graduate of the BA (Hons) Public Relations at London College of Communication and thoroughly enjoyed studying at UAL.
Professor Vicky Gunn (Head of Learning and Teaching, Glasgow School of Arts) will share her work on diversity and inclusion.
Dr Kate Hatton is Head of Inclusive Education Programmes, UAL and edited 'Towards an Inclusive Arts Education' in 2015. Kate is also Chair of the Inclusive Arts Education Forum (IAEF), member of the Runnymede Trust Academic Forum and of the Commonwealth Creativities in Intercultural Arts Network (CIAN), Cambridge University.
Efisia Tranza and Angelina Hewitt (Dyslexia Support Co-ordinators at UAL) will provide a practical session, with a focus on simple adjustments that can increase accessibility for all students as well as students with specific learning difficulties.
